Wake Up
By CASSIA BERMAN
My dead friend and long-ago lover
led me hand-in-hand into the dark place where he lives,
and somehow I found myself alone. Looking for him
I passed by people living in encampments,
long wet corridors, a rat scurried by,
and finally I came to a place without people,
dank, puddled, desolate as far as my eyes could see.
I tried to find my way back, calling out for people,
and the inner voice told me: “There is no way out of here
except to wake up.” And I did.
All day long, as I made my way through the hours
of a pleasant life against the backdrop
of a world wracked by death, war, insoluble questions and problems,
those words repeated themselves to me
like a teaching from the Upanishads:
There is no way out of here
except to wake up!
